Dear Classmates:
We are pleased to announce our 20th Reunion Service Project: Supporting
the Greylock ABC Clothing Sale through the donation of gently used adult and
teen clothing.
Greylock A Better Chance Background
Greylock A Better Chance was founded forty years ago to bring bright, motivated students
of color from disadvantaged educational circumstances to our fine public high
school. The students live with resident
directors in a house on Hoxsey St. in Williamstown during the academic
year and attend Mt. Greylock Regional High School.
Since
its founding, nearly 100 graduates have gone on to colleges all over the United
States. This year's graduates are
headed for George Washington University and Williams College.
ass="MsoPlainText" style="text-align: left;">Approximately
$100,000 a year is needed to run the program, all of it raised locally through
a fund drive and special projects like ABC Room Service (providing
accommodations in private homes for families who attend Williams commencement),
the Clothing Sale, and a biennial art auction.
As
noted in the chapter’s information brochure, “Greylock ABC is a community
project in every sense. The
community runs and supports it and the community in turn is enriched by it,
helping not only to provide a better chance for the students, but to build a
better community
for ourselves.”
Clothing
Sale
The
ABC Clothing Sale has grown to be a gigantic annual event that offers gently
used men’s, women’s, and teen clothing, shoes, and accessories plus household
linens for incredibly low prices. The more intimate “Red Carpet Room” is the boutique
collection of the most outstanding clothing and accessories at slightly higher
prices. Held on the last Saturday of September at the First Congregational Church
in Williamstown, the sale provides a way to recycle donated items that are in
nearly-new condition. The quality
is exceptional; the prices are phenomenally low.
The
ABC Clothing Sale was first held in 1994 and has grown each year; the gross
proceeds from the 2007 sale topped $24,000.
What
You Can Do
Go to
your closet(s), storage units, or garage and take a look at your wardrobe. Has
an item been worn in the past year? If not, will it really see the light of
day? That item and others like it
are perfect to be donated to the ABC Clothing Sale. Please bring a donation
with you for our 20th Reunion. We will have clearly marked
collection boxes in our reunion dorm area.
For more information on Greylock ABC, please visit their website or contact Barbara Roberston (413) 458-5676. Questions about the service project, please
contact Ellen O’Connell.
